HAWKS’ GIRLS RETURN TO FINAL FOUR TO ADD 2A TITLE TO LAST YEAR’S 3A

An unassisted goal by  Semret Seyoum with 23 minutes left to play gave the River Hill girls soccer team their second straight Class 2A
South regional title with a 3-2 victory over Mount Hebron.

The Hawks jumped out to an early lead against the Vikings on goals by Brittany Yancey and Janie Tankard in the opening 20 minutes.

While most teams would find the lead insurmountable against the powerful Hawks, the Vikings continued to battle and tied the game
on goals by Rachel McKee and Jessica Giles in a 15-minute span late in the first half.

River Hill coach Brian Song said the teams played even until Seyoum’s game-winner midway through the second half.

The Hawks’ unbeaten streak is now at 15 straight games and they have not lost since a 3-1 setback to Severna Park on Sept. 8.

River Hill is 16-1-1 with eight shutouts for sophomore keeper Carylynne Hudson, who made eight saves.

Yancey, who, like Anna Kim, also had an assist, has 13 goals and 12 assists on the year, and has 27 each in career goals and assists.

River Hill senior Eric Suter has 18 goals and six assists, and she has 52 career goals and 26 career assists.

River Hill has won state titles in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2006. Mount Hebron’s last state title came in 2000.

The Hawks, who play Century in Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. semifinal at South River, went 20-0 last season with 11 shutouts against 11 goals allowed.

The Hawks are 51-4-1 under coach Brian Song, whose daughter, Amy, has one goal and 25 assists. Song has 13 assists this year, 12 of which have been off of throw-ins.
